Switching Teams

I've caved, and bought myself one of these.

I hate to admit it (well, I don't actually, but...), but the experience (aside from one small issue) has been awesome. Apple have nailed the unboxing. I was so excited to get this thing home, and when I turned it on, it just started. No mucking about with motherboard BIOS diagnostics and fifteen different component vendors branding (motherboard, bios, sata bios, video bios, schmios bios). I also need to say, it was fast. If I start both machines at the same time, I have a usable desktop (as in, able to launch applications responsively) on the iMac while Vista is still on the green kernel boot scroll bar.

Now, I'll give you that the Vista machine is a couple of years old now, with all the cruft that accumulates, and the iMac is only weeks old. However, the Vista machine is no slouch. It's the same power as the iMac, with much better video and hard drives, and I'm pretty good at keeping the machine clean and up to date.

Anyway, the upshot is, I've started working out Cocoa and Objective-C and how it all goes together on OS-X. So I'll most likely start posting about those experiences now. I also want to start a project that involves most of the Microsoft enterprise stack (WPF/WCF/WWF), and that should start to feature a bit too. There'll be a bit more posting on the planning side of things - why I've decided to go the way I have, etc - as well as technical aspects.

And on top of that, I want to tart up the blog. As design is one of my pet loves, I hope to discuss the process involved with that too.

I do have to force myself to write at the moment. I'm sure that nobody is reading this anymore, so it's going to pretty much be my own little dumping ground. Anyway, I still want to put up good content, so it will be good mental excersise.

I'm Back

I'm starting again. The other stuff? Well, it was rubbish basically. All over the place. No worth to anyone. Little more than vanity gone awry. This time I'm keeping it strictly to the magic of turning an idea into a product and as much as there is that goes in between. Lately, the bulk of my focus professionally has been on Silverlight. So a large amount of what I'll be writing about will have something to do with that. But I'm also into designing architectures and interfaces and user interactions. I suppose you'd call me a "devigner" to use the new nonsense term. Anyway, things should get a bit more interesting around here from now on.

Hi, I'm Geoff.

I've worked as a professional software developer for more than twelve years now, and an amateur since I was a kid. Software development and design is one of my passions, and I like to share what I learn.
